Early Language & Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit: mastering tools to assess and improve early language and literacy programs and practices.
The Training of Trainers Event for the new Early Language & Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit (ELLCO), Pre-K has been postponed until the fall when more people will be able to attend. About the Toolkit
The Early Language & Literacy Classroom Observation (ELLCO) Toolkit contains three assessment tools: a Literacy Environment Checklist, a protocol to conduct classroom observations and administer teacher interviews, and a Literacy Activities Rating Scale.
Across the country, educators, administrators, researchers, and leaders of literacy initiatives are using the Toolkit to gather crucial information on the quality of early language and literacy environments and instruction. This data can then be used to enhance young children’s preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school language and literacy experiences.

Training Options
It is essential to complete ELLCO training to understand how to use the Toolkit appropriately and reliably. Nationwide, highly-qualified instructors offer the following options for ELLCO training sessions at the preschool/kindergarten level.
- ELLCO Overview (1 day): This highly interactive lecture/discussion session introduces the conceptual framework of early literacy and provides general, overview knowledge of the purpose, structure, and intended uses of the ELLCO Toolkit. Participants have the opportunity to practice using the ELLCO to analyze videos and scenarios. ELLCO Overview training is available through Brookes Publishing's Brookes On Location (BOL) Program.
ELLCO Training of Trainers Event: The ELLCO Training of Trainers will provide foundational knowledge of the ELLCO Toolkit and will enable participants to score items from the ELLCO using written scenarios and video vignettes. The training will also provide participants with the information and materials they need to train others on the use of the ELLCO.
